It teaches you to decide.” – Alfredo Vismara

Kime no Kata, the kata of decision, was born as Shinken shobu no kata, the form of real combat. Together with Kodokan Goshin Jutsu it is one of the great references for studying Shobu Ho, the martial side of Judo that is practised less today, but which, according to Jigoro Kano, you need to know to understand Kodokan Judo as a whole.

The kata studies situations in which precision, distance, timing and determination become essential. Being decisive does not mean being aggressive: it means knowing what you are doing, why you are doing it and how to control your action.

In this lesson the Master takes Tori and Uke through the whole kata, from the bow with weapons to the closing with the sword. For every step he explains not only how it is done, but why it is done that way.

What the lesson covers

The history of the kata: from the Shinken shobu no kata of 1887 to the version defined in 1906 at the Dai Nippon Butokukai, where the work of Jujutsu masters was added to Jigoro Kano’s project, with 8 Idori and 12 Tachi Ai techniques. The account is based on a paper by Toshiro Daigo.

The difference between Shinken shobu, real combat, and randori, the training form.

Weapons etiquette: how to carry the sword and the dagger, the bow, and how to lay them down and pick them up at the start and end of the kata.

The distances between Tori and Uke.

Kiai: its different types and the different moments to use it.

The Idori and Tachi Ai techniques, including Ryote dori, Tsukkake, Suri age, Yoko uchi, Kiri komi and Kiri oroshi.

Uke’s role with the sword: gedan, jodan and seigan no kamae.

The details that make the difference

Why at the end of the kata the sword is drawn out with the left hand, not the right.

Why several techniques are performed at 45 degrees to the audience.

Why the distances set in the late 1800s, based on an average height of about 1.60 m, must be adapted to the height of Tori and Uke.

How a good initial contact makes Hara gatame and Waki gatame easy, the controls that recur throughout the kata.

How to tell Tori’s kiai apart from Uke’s.

From kata to randori

Kata and randori are two different tools, but not two different kinds of Judo. Kime no Kata helps you recognise what makes the difference in randori: the hesitation that costs you an opportunity, force used at the wrong moment, a movement that stays ineffective because a clear decision is missing.

Who it is for

For those preparing Kime no Kata for grading exams, but also for those who want to study it all year round and not only before a test. For teachers, who can devote a few minutes of every class to one technique, one distance or one principle of the kata. And for anyone who wants to know the side of Kodokan Judo tied to real combat.

Video helps you observe: it is practice on the tatami, together with your Uke, that lets you start to feel.

Technical video lesson on Kime no Kata by Master Alfredo Vismara (15 October 2022, about 65 minutes): history of the kata, weapons etiquette, distances, kiai and the Idori and Tachi Ai techniques.
